Cucumber splitting

I know this is one way they propagate but I've heard differing opinions on what circumstances they split under. Some say they do it when they are well fed and happy and others say it's when they are stressed.

I've had this cuc about 10 months. I noticed he looked odd last night and when I got home from work today....voila!
