What does nitrifying bacteria have that keeps it safe from peroxide? Also, how are you sure that it is indeed safe?

It's not what they have but more how they are made up cell structure wise.
How do I know it is safe? Through research
Most all of my study of marine tanks involves h2o2.

What about their cell wall protects it? Were there any studies done on how it affects the bacteria or only based on changes or lack there of ammonia?

Most members involved in this study based it off of ammonia
H2o2 does not break down high protein cell walls in the concentration used in the study.

I've read some of it before but what are the long term effects? That's the question. Bacteria is the single most important thing in any aquarium and you're adding something that kills it. Maybe at that concentration it doesn't but I would be hesitant. Same way I would be hesitant to add a non lethal amount of copper to my reef tank

Thanks twilliard for putting the time into researching this topic.

I've had a couple mats that like to develop along a few spots in my rock on the regular but for some reason yesterday when lights came on things were overtaken. I'd say about 30% of my rock has some on it and bottom of frag tank is blanketed.
  • Nitrates - .5 - 2.5
  • Phosphates - .04 - .06
Only real change I've had recently is starting to dose Amino Acids again with AcroPower. From my notes I started at about a 77 mL/week dose on 7/23 and ramped up to 92 mL/week dose on 8/21. I've been doing a lot of reading yesterday/this morning on Hydrogen Peroxide dosing at a rate of 1 mL/10 Gallons of water every twelve hours (before and after lights are on) for 14 days.

My system details are listed below but want to be especially careful given that it's a rather full 600 gallon system and can only have so much water on hand for water change.

System details:
  • 600 Gallon DT (Need to do some updated calculations but I usually use water volume of about 750 gallons)
    • 140 Gallon Frag Tank
    • 125 Gallon Sump
    • Between piping and skimmer have about another 50 Gallons of Water
  • Flow (Target 25-30k GPH at any point but able to produce 37k GPH)
    • 3 Closed Loops (2 Dart Golds, 1 Gold Hammerhead)
    • 2 X MP60s
    • 2 X MP40s
    • Gyre on Frag Tank
  • Lighting
    • 6 X Atlantik V1s on DT
    • 2 X Atlantik V1s on Frag Tank
  • Filtration/Additives
    • Bill Wann Skimmer
    • LaCl dosing for Phosphate
    • Carbon Dosing through 1 L of biopellets in reactor
    • Dose Bactiv8 per instructions through doser
    • AcroPower
Please let me know if you have any questions on any other parameters but wanted to get guidance on whether I should jump to Hydrogen Peroxide or just try some of the more regular methods. Yesterday I siphoned about 2/3 of it from DT but fully expecting tonight the it'll be back!

Peroxide came in today, looking to dose automatically through a Drew's doser. At the rate it operates I'd run the doser for 68 minutes. Is there a disadvantage to the slow dosage or is this an approach that has worked for others?

Through tests as prescribed also was able to verify it is Cyano.

Since no replies to previous posts I've started the regimen as I've read other sources and got plenty of responses elsewhere.

Hey everyone,

I was referred to this thread hoping that someone could help me with my algae issues.

first here are the tank Specs;

20 g H
Nitate = 2ppm
Phosphate = 0.02ppm
Alk = 9.5
Calcium= 420 ppm
Mag= 1600 ppm ( tried Tech M but no luck)

I have been dosing NoPox for the last 2 weeks including Reef Energy A/B for the SPS.

However, I am having algae issue ( see pictures) Top left of the tank is the worst area

Is this Cyano? How do I get rid of it?

Thank for your help

I'm not certain what it is but I have it in my tank as well on some rocks. It don't seem to be hurting anything at all so I just leave it alone. As long as it's been there if it were harmful to anything I would have seen it by now.

I doubt it is hurting corals either. So far they are doing well but I would prefer to have the dark brown algae gone or at least under control. I have been dosing peroxide for 5 days. Hopefully, it will get some of it off.

Has anybody tried eromycin? I heard this will clear up bacteria issues in tanks? Not sure on how much to use.

I wouldn't use that, too harsh compared to alternatives. that doser vibrant is getting better reviews than the antibiotics
