Newbie here .

RS G2 max Nano Peninsula
Dry Rock
Live Sand
RO/DI water used
26 gallon Tank

-Dr tims one and only and dr tims ammonium chloride for cycle

Im on day 19 of my cycle , My ph is 8.0 , ammonia 0 , Nitrite 5 ppm , Nitrates 40ppm .

I performed a 40% water change today and my Nitrites have yet to come down. Before the WC my nitrates were over 80ppm , but my nitrites do not want to budge . What am I doing wrong ?

My nitrites got stuck a while as well. Reading the Dr. Tim’s guide it makes you think it’ll be good in like 8 days…but in many cases (including mine) it can take a few weeks. Nitrites aren’t as big a deal for salt water fish as they are for fresh water, so you might be good to go. I suspect you’re close to that level going down anyway.

Also. The presence of nitrites will mess with the nitrate reading. Don’t stress too much.

I just checked my notes. On day 15 of my tank cycle, my nitrites were approaching 0 but my nitrate was 75 ppm. I gave it another week and everything fell into line without major water changes…the bacteria just needed to catch up.

You're cycled 🙂

Nitrite is non-toxic in saltwater tanks, and there's no need to test for or worry about nitrite. You can safely start to slowly stock with some hardy livestock.

Good luck!

Great to hear you are getting into this and progressing well. I also have a RD G2 Nano Peninsula. You should post some pictures and/or start a build thread so folks can follow along and see what you create!
