Detritous in Overflow

I just noticed a layer of detritous in my overflow box.
Should I remove it? (It's not convenient/easy to vacuum)
Should I stir it up so that the sump/filter sock can remove it?
Any suggestions?

I would just stir it up and see if itll go to sump. If it doesnt let it settla and vacuum it out

I would definitely remove it. It will continue to release nasties into your tank, and also put this on a maintenance schedule. I have a similar problem with my sump. My skimmer sits up on a plexiglass shelf about six inches above the bottom of the tank. This area below the skimmer is quite dark and therefore I never took much notice of it. When I shined a flashlight under the skimmer, there was a muck field below the skimmer. What I find puzzling is that this section of the sump is where I also have a filter sock. So the water coming in first goes through the sock and then sucked up into the skimmer. You would think this would be pretty clean water. Well it’s not! Where is this muck coming from? Even the heater is covered in it.

So I now have this on my maintenance schedule. Here it is all cleaned up.
