I stumbled my way into some used Hydros gear for free (X4 and WaveEngine v1). I already have a WaveEngine v2, and I'm wondering what the real functional differences are. Thinking of using the v1 on another tank.

The v1 is NOT the one that takes the Mobius chip, just the "regular" controller.

I think the difference is the v2 can also control wireless hydros devices like a feeder or power strip. The v1 couldn't control Mobius. If it had the etm chip it could control pre Mobius pumps.

If that's all the functionality that's missing and it works just like my v2 otherwise, then I'm good!

The v2 can be a wifi master the WELE and v1 cannot be a wifi master but if it is in a collective with other controllers that is not a big issue. Neither v1 or v2 can control Mobius MP series pumps. Some of the older Mobius pumps can be downgraded to pre Mobius but not the newer ones. The v1 either had the RF module pre installed or did not have it. The v2 comes without one and it is up to you to install one if you need it.

So all the flow patterns and scheduling are the same. That's what I needed to know.

There was a guy in a local Facebook group that broke his tank down a year ago and finally decided to sell the stuff off. He had a pair of OctoPulse 4 pumps, a Varios 2, an X4 and a v1 WaveEngine. I negotiated a good price for all of it, but the day before we were scheduled to meet, he plugged everything in to verify that it all still worked... and the WE and X4 did NOT. I gave him $100 for the pumps, and he threw in the controllers (free) for me to tinker with. I got home, cleaned everything up, unplugged all the old sensors and probes and fired them up. I got power, did a factory reset and then added them to my Hydros account (I have other controllers and a v2 WE on another tank already).

He also threw in a pair of Hydra 26HDs for free because he didn't know if they worked or not either. I cleaned them up, factory reset and fired them up. Everything worked fine except the fans, so they overheated and shut down after about 15 minutes of running with everything at 100%.

All told, I ended up with two OctoPulse 4s, a Varios 2, an X4, a WE v1 and two Hydra 26HDs for $100! I'll have to buy new sensors, probes and fans for the lights, but you really can't beat that deal!
