Hi guys, I think I have Dino’s. I’m so frustrated not being able to figure out my tank. It’s been going up and down for 6 months. Do water changes every week. All water parameters seem great.

Please give parameter numbers and generally with dino, phos and nitrate will be low to zero. Please provide pics under white lighting to see what you are referring to and to confirm dino. Water changes weekly may be part of the issue.

Please provide the actual numbers for each parameters. Alk, cal, mag, phos, nit, salinity and pics under white light. Technically dinos can only be positively ID with a microscope. Different types of dinos require different types of remedies too.

Hi and welcome to R2R! Here you’ll find people to be friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I went through a massive battle with dinos. Doing water changes just gives the dinos more trace elements. For me a friend of mine sold me two true live rocks full of xenia, pods, and all sorts of good bacteria. That ended a 6 month long battle with dinos within about a day. Keep your chin up. It’ll work out. Also don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s what we’re here for.

Hello, and welcome to the channel. Many different ways to deal with this issue. For most, we do and Depend on the situation, can be worst case scenario. We did not do water changes. We used a maxi jet pump, connect a hose and I the outlet, used the inlet to suck the water through the pump into a 10-micro sock filter while the sock filter was in the tank to catch the debris. The other person or use your other hand, brush off the rock. Did this everyday, and poof…all gone.

I did a 7 day blackout with a black trash bag. I remember dosing vibrant and peroxide too. No light whatsoever in the tank after I manually got out all the algae I could. I had dinos, green hair, brown, the whole gamut. Just take your time, do the research and don't, I SAY DON'T over react. It only makes things worse. I overdid it with Denitrate and that's what brought on the dinos. Bottoming out the nutrients is a bad thing... 6 months was the peak of ugly for me. It gets easier after 9 months or so I promise. Also, throw some pods in there. According to a BRS video they with help you through the uglies. Couldn't hurt.

People will offer anecdotal evidence and stories here. Advanced reefers and newbies suffer and breakdown systems because of this. Here is my routine on the anecdotal side that might help. I have little algae issues in display except some turfs.

While I certainly had share of issues, Dino is not one of my main problems.

1. The one time I did have them I had RODI issue and changed all membrane and resins and issue subsided quickly even though tds was 0 or 1.

2. I observe tank daily and more thoroughly weekly. Trace amounts of dino can be seen floating in my refugium in my system before it does anything else and can be stopped there. I wont have a solution if system is under 1 year old.

3. I also added new ocean direct sand in refugium prior to eliminating issue I have seen.

4. I keep standard to high nutrient levels over what other SPS often keep. I have 0.03 to 0.25 ppm Phosphate and 7 to 20 ppm Nitrate. I never bottom out and use Tropic Marin NP Elim and Bactobalance sparingly.

5. I use Mazzei venturi skimmer that is not that aggressive really. I skim wet sometimes and dry sometimes.
