Hi, I am new here. I am from Europe, and at the moment my friends and I discuss a video we found on YouTube. It's about the famous New England Aquarium and its tanks, which some of us feel uncomfortable with it because of the overstocking and man-made reef. What do you guys think?

You know the whole 1in or so per gallon is bs? Fake reef is great, they won't be able to keep them alive so you rather see dead reef? Also as long they have proper filtration they can keep the tank stock and vice versa. They seem happy and exploring the tank.

What are the negative symptoms of overstocking in the video?
I see very little. All of the fish seem thick and healthy. The video doesn't show any serious aggression. No torn fins or other signs of fighting.
If there was a problem with the livestock, that could be traced back to over stocking, then I would agree there's a problem. Simply having a large number of fish is not over stocking.

No offence but it seems if your blowing smoke . Have you been here in person. Those fish look very healthy indeed. Also they have made the reef very realistic. Have you ever been diving or or you one of those green from the grass without ever having seen them in there natural habitat. Also the very difficult soecies in this tank look extremely healthy. Could you name some of the harder to keep ones in the video ?
I see nothing wrong here. Happy healthy fish being serviced by an incredibly robust filtration system. If the fish eat prepared food, coral is not necessary for them.
No idea how big the fish tank is, and I don't want see dead reef either. I just see a lot of fish swimming around in a environment, which not exist in nature. This is what I discuss with friends at the moment ...

I am sure they have a HUGE sump of sorts behind the scenes to increase the water volume to accomodate all those fish.
they do look healthy, and i don't see anything wrong with fake reefs either (sure, it's not as pretty as the real stuff, but if they can't maintain it, fake is the way to go)

Fish tanks are not natural by definition. Do you think this hobby is disturbing?

They are scientists not hobbyists running that place and also have a 200,000 gallon aquarium at their disposal I think if overcrowding was an issue it would have been dealt with.

That tank was very well taken care of for a fish only tank. So clean with all those fish in the tank. Its not easy keeping that fish load in a tank but they have a very large filtration be hind the tank that you don't see.

So you actually have no idea about what is in this system. What runs it behind the scenes and that the fish as long as they are fed and maintained well do not need corals to thrive. I suppose if they had corals in there you would be complaining about that. What tank do you have ? What fish and corals do you have ?
No, I don't think this hobby is disturbing at all. I am just a little surprised to see fake wildlife habitat at the new england aquarium, which is by the way famous for education and environment protection.

I can understand why a conversation about this tank being over stocked would be brought up. I can even see why people would see this video and express their views on fake corals. I even think it's cool if some people don't personally like the tank.
IMHO, when someone says a tank is over stocked, it implies that there's a problem. Like saying the fish are under fed, infested with Ich, or the tank is not well maintained. I would actually like to save this video to show people what a well fed, and healthy fish looks like. The only problem I see, is a slight indication of HALLE on some of the large hippo tangs. IMHO, sadly, it's very rare to see any of these fish, at that size, in captivity, that don't show signs of HALLE. Maybe it's a nutritional thing, IDK, but if that's the only problem I can find, I think they're doing pretty good by these fish.
