I don't know about the hobby scene in the US, but in Europe we have a problem with corals outgrowing tanks and respectively a huge exchange between hobbyists with frags...Also most corals imported are actually coming from coral farms, which seem to be a good alternative to wild coral imports and a sustainable choice. So I'd think it is possible to populate also a public aquarium with farmed corals only and let them grow...This could even be used to educate the public about coral propagation...I suspect the problem here is rather that with such a big fish community and high density in fish stocking (requiring regular and sufficient feeding to control competition) the water quality is difficult to maintain allowing coral growth.Leah, they have so little real coral because of conservation efforts. They told us at a "behind the scenes" tour that it would be irresponsible as conservationists to turn around and take that much coral from the ocean. Then the resources needed to maintain the coral would eat into the money needed for other critters while increasing their carbon footprint. There's also the issue with so many fish not being "coral compatible", so they would have that to contend with as well.
BUT, I can't say I've cared for all of their displays. This one was just too much, IMO.....

Many of the displays in our state aquariums change over time. You can't wait for something to grow, as it a year it may be a totally different display. Not all the displays are without coral, just all of them do not have it. I think that's a nice balance. I don't need to see coral in every tank.

This is a false statement and is a opinion not based on any facts of the coral or fish industry. Most saltwater reef tanks have a lifespan of under 2 years... Most coral and fish in Europe and the US that is sold dies in a reef tank.

This statement is kinda true but not 100%. Coral farms are set up to better control the profits of the coral collectors not to save the reefs. Sorry for this misconception on how this industry works. Collection of coral happens for Europe and the US the same.... The "frag" movement and acceptance of smaller coral is something the industry pushed to better maximize profits again not to save the reefs. I don't think wild corals are going anywhere any time soon.

What 5 or even 15 year old wants to learn about coral propagation? I would tell the aquariums around the world to take the biggest the most impressive coral out of the ocean and say "This is what we are losing right now help" (give money). Not to fill a show tank full of SPS that will take 5-10 years to fill out a new display.
This age group of kids are where Aquariums are mostly focused I would say to promote ocean life. It is done for a reason so kids can grow up and become marine biologist or researchers to help save and or help the animals of the ocean
On one final note YOUR conception of water quality and how to maintain these fish came from facility's you now strike a issue with. This whole thread is counter productive to the real issues we have with are reefs around the world and is opinionated garbage based in lala land.
I am neutral on many subjects when it comes to the internet but the lack of research and the gross negligence of the title of this thread is unbearable.
I appreciate your opinions but don't state them as facts and fix your title of this thread as it is just click bate.

I'm not sure why anyone is angry.... it's just the OPs opinion on this topic. It's no big deal.
The Dallas World Aquarium, my local aquarium, has some nice regional displays, as well as a tunnel display, predator display, and shark tank.
Ive been on a busy holiday weekend when the place is teeming with kids.
The kids are interested in the things that move and catch their attention.
Like the dart frog displays never have a line, there not much action going on in there. They find the frog and move on.
The regional displays include some soft corals like mushrooms, and leathers. Not really much talk about those going on in front of the display...
Have some anenomes as well..
But mostly hear talk of the garden eels and fish.
The public aquarium audience is families and schools, for the most part. As elder said, promoting conservation and, hopefully, inspiring kids into the sciences.
What is your local aquarium like? I've not visited any European aquariums to compare...

If this is directed to my post I apologize as I am not angry just worried about the industry on a whole. Posts like this do not help anyone or anything. It is so opinionated and on anecdotal information it is just unhelpful to the whole industry. IT does injustice to many that try to help the overall global revitalization of the Reefs.
I respect and the OP opinion but it was purposely titled in a way not to spark conversation but to hurt the aquarium in question.

Nope, it was the thread as a whole.
I wouldn't over-analyze a choice of words in a title on a discussion forum. I'm sure his intention is not to "hurt" the aquarium industry.
I don't see anything disturbing about this video. Filtration is on point and with such a variety, heavy stocking will ease aggression in fish. No one fish can be singled out with so many. They have plenty of room to swim and aren't cramped at all. More marine science degrees went into that aquarium than we can imagine.
I would have to beg to differ... posts like this do hurt the industry, even if it is unintentional. I do see your point on over-analyzing the title just it is a little over the top.
The "Industry" however is not my concern as it has its own political battles it the actual reefs around the world that I worry about. If million overstocked tanks or dead fish would save them, then I do not see any issue at all.

I actually didn't say one way or the other whether I believed their comment could hurt the industry, so I'm not sure what you're begging to differ on. I said I doubt that was his intention. The video WAS disturbing to him, so it seems it was a very appropriate title to a thread.

This is what irritated me. There are so many examples of fish that not be kept in certain tanks. This tank is awesome. The skill to balance and maintain the diversity of fish in this tank is a big undertaking. One of the first comments was about conservation. Hence an artifical reef is conservation in itself which was a contradiction from te start. Also the heading was drastically stated. For every action there will always be a reaction . This may not have been the intention but it proves dont make a statement if you can use facts or knowledge to back it up. But i must say has kept me entertained during the day lol and it sure woke up allot of people [emoji3]

I hold a collection permit in Mauritius and I am actively lobbying the government at my own expense to allow coral farming off the island. I know and speak to a lot of stores and suppliers in this industry and I apologize for having a critical view of this subject and this post. I respect your opinion but do find it flawed. I do however thank you for sharing just wished you used a different aquarium as the one in question is one if not the best in the world.
