DIY Ammonia dosing for low nitrate systems

The mixed solution will not smell, only ammonium bicarbonate in powdered form smells a bit.

If it is stored properly in an air-tight plastic container, it is not an issue. If the packaging is insufficient you can put a plastic bag around it or put it into another container that does not react with the reagent.

Aquellos Those 7 ml are for 100 liters of water so if my tank is 800 Liters would be 56 ml a day? At peak lighting hours?

Yes, sorry for the confusion, the translator is fatal.

This is the dosing recommendation on page 1:

To add 0.1 mg/L ammonia to an aquarium, you would need to add 2.3 mL of either stock solution to a 100 L (26 gallon) aquarium. You may need to add this amount multiply times per day to dose enough.

That would be 8 x 2.3 = 18 ml for 800 L.

I'm not sure where in this thread the 7 ml came from. :)

Muchos Thank you for the information!, can I distribute those 18 ml throughout the day? In 24 or 48 doses?

It’s always good to start almost anything new slowly. The 7 mL sounds good to start, then after a few days go to that twice a day. The material dissolves very easily in the ro/di water.

No need to test nitrate more often than weekly, IMO.
Someone with an 80gal system asked if 7mL was a good starting point, and you agreed. Anonymous'Reefer90 thought this was the starting point for a 100L system and simply multiplied the dosage with his 800L system.

7mL ⋅ 800L ÷ 100L = 56mL

7mL in 80gal would actually translate to 15mL daily in 800L.

I would start by dosing 1mL every two hours (12 × 1mL). 1mL every hour would also be fine (24 × 1mL).
You can keep increasing the dosage if you don't see any changes in nitrate (NO₃) levels after a few days.

In your 800L tank, it is safe to add 18mL at once. For safety you should try to not add more than 18mL at once.

Example: Let's assume you want to add 72mL daily as you don't reach the desired nitrate (NO₃) levels otherwise:
  • 12 × 6mL is fine,
  • 8 × 9mL is fine,
  • 6 × 12mL is fine,
  • 4 × 18mL is still fine, but
  • 2 × 36mL might be too much at once. Don't go over 18mL at once.

Thank you so much to everyone who has responded and helped with information about this new aquarium for me. I've already installed the dosing pump and the stock solution. Tomorrow, when I get home from work, I'll get everything ready to start.

Sounds good.

Happy reefing. :)

Hi Randy, I currently have a Hydros X10 in which in pump 1 I dose AFR 50 ml in 48 microdoses it should be noted that every time I fill the bottle I calibrate the pump and in the hydros logs I can check how much dosage per dose, in pump 2 of the Hydros I will put the stock solution of the ammonium bicarbonate the 18 ml distributed in 24-48 microdoses. In the time I've been dosing AFR I haven't suffered from jams.

Simplemente no estoy seguro.
Así que sSo if it might be convenient to mix ammonium bicarbonate and disodium phosphate 1:1?

It is ok to mix except that the phosphate raises pH and may make the ammonia off gas to the air faster.
