DIY canister cryptic Refugium

I have a fluval canister filter and I’m considering adding it as a cryptic Refugium , what are the general benefits of doing this cause I honestly don’t know how the random bugs and stuff decide to crawl or swim into the tank to get eaten or whatever happens, could I like just culture stuff in there then dump scoops in the display on occasions or something
