DIY For Manganese

Manganese sulfate monohydrate is 32.5% manganese. To make 100 ug/mL = 100 mg/L manganese , add 100/.325 =308 mg of your material to a liter of ro/di. :)

Any thoughts on how long manganese glutamate is stable once dissolved (in my dosing container)?

At the 1 gram/liter concentration.

I expect to use mine over months or longer. I do not think degradation is a concern.

@Randy Holmes-Farley

I was hoping you can help me with the calculation for my manganese dosing. I’ve been dosing 3 ml a day of the ati manganese solution for months now, but I’m lookin into the diy manganese to save on cost. I bought the bulk supplements manganese gluconate powder you recommended, but I’m having trouble figuring out how much to dose. I don’t have a specific microgram per liter I’m trying to hit. I’m just looking to dose the same amount that I’m currently putting in right now. Do you know if there’s a standard concentration to the manganese solutions that are sold? If I make a solution with your guidelines earlier in the thread (1 gram of powder for every 1 liter of water) and dose 3 ml, will that be the same as the 3 ml of manganese I’m currently dosing of the ati solution? I attached a picture of the ati manganese I currently use. I didn’t see a concentration on brs where I normally buy it. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

I’m certain there is no standard concentration for dosing solutions.

Does ATI have a calculator you use? We can get potency from that if they do, assuming they do not otherwise list it.

I couldn’t find a calculator anywhere, but I did find this information on their site for a different manganese bottle. I’m not sure if that is also for the one I’ve been using or not.

Thanks! So just to make sure I understand it correctly, if I make the solution 3.2 grams per liters and dose 3 ml of the solution it should be equal to what I’m dosing right now? Given that the information for the new bottle on their site is the same for the one I’ve been using.
My manganese gluconate recipe in post 7 of this thread (link below) needs 3.2 times as much to give the same rise as that ATI product:

Hi all,

Just a general hint: There a differences depending on the chemical bond you use. It might happen that your levels don’t raise according to what you dose or also that the concentration of the element changes when stored.
Also, keep in mind when you dose gluconate that you feed your bacteria which can for example lead to a phosphorus limitation if you run your tank on low phosphate levels (similar to other carbon sources).

That comment is not doing your company a service.

The amount of gluconate on a trace element like manganese is way, way too small to have any noticeable effect.

Let’s suppose that one doses 1 ug/L of manganese every day. That is more than the full amount of manganese in natural seawater. But let’s use it as a high estimate of what someone might possibly dose each day.

Using manganese gluconate, that is adding about 7 ug/L of gluconate. In a 100 gallon tank, that means one is adding about 2.6 mg of organic matter to the entire tank.

If one compares that to vodka dosing, it’s the equivalent of dosing about 6.5 ul of vodka to the entire tank.

Thus, the gluconate is adding less than 1/100th of a mL per 100 gallons

That amount of organic added is definitely not going to have any noticeable effect on any aquarium.

Hi Randy,

The main reason I wanted to post was the link to our calculator, but somehow that dissapeared 😅. New try: ATI Calculator

You are right, if it is very little organics, you probably wont have issues. But if you do it the same way with several elements and also on a regular basis, there is a certain risk.

@Randy Holmes-Farley

I just want to confirm that I understood what you were saying before I switch over to the diy formula. Does what I wrote here make sense or am I doing the calculation wrong? Please let me know whenever you get a chance. Thanks!

Yes, that seems correct. :)

However, I’m not sure what form the ATI product is, and it may be more prone to removal by precipitating than is manganese gluconate. But I think it’s an ok plan.

Manganese gluconate is 12.4% manganese by weight.

Dissolve 1 gram of the solid material in 1 L of RO/DI. That solution contains 124 mg of manganese, so the concentration is 124 mg/L or 124 ug/mL.

Adding 1 mL to 100 L of tank water will boost aquarium manganese levels by 124 ug per 100 L or 1.24 ug/L.
So is this the same concentraction of the reef moonshiners manganese or is more potent? Thanks

I don't know what Reef Moonshine uses. There is no standard concentration for dosing solutions.

@Randy Holmes-Farley how often have you noticed the manganese gluconate stock solution needing to be discarded? I bought the smallest bag but the number of days 1 liter can dose routinely is many years. Wondering if you’re clued in to color change or anything else that you might replace the stock?

Just wanted to tag onto this thread with some guidance on concentration as I have been dosing my own DIY Manganese for over a decade. I think you can use whatever form of Mn you like, my concentration I dose is 0.8µg per day. I've had no issues and have even dosed 2X the amount for 1.6µg per day with ICP checks and never had problems. Mn gets used pretty quickly so even though you dose you might still never see it in an ICP test.
