You shouldn't need an air pump, but there is no reason you can't use one. You should be bringing enough water down from the DT and have enough motion in the refugium that the water will be well oxygenated.

I don’t think that would be necessary if you have a protein skimmer in the sump which also oxygenates the water

I have an air pump in my refugium, I find it helps me keep my pH level just that wee bit higher.

I could achieve the same thing i'm sure running a fresh air line in to my skimmer though..

In any case, can't hurt- it will create more salt creep though
