Plumbing has been my biggest headache, and my ex boyfriend tried to help out last year and kinda did some incorrect things, so I'm starting over from scratch.

So it appears that the bulkheads are both female threaded bulkheads, and that I will need male adapters for them. But, the bulkhead that drains down into the sump is 1.5 inches, and the bulkhead for the return is 3/4 inch. How do I reduce the draining side to 3/4? Because I can't have it draining faster than water is being placed back in.

I'm attaching a screenshot of my brs cart before I check out (.. I decided that I wanted pretty piping VS local hardware store white). Am I missing anything? I have real tuff to put on the threaded bulkhead fitting and adapter, and cement for the piping for the slip fittings. I'm doing a lot of unions to be on the safe side. Ln

Also, in one of the pics, what is the black piece called that screwed onto my pump? I'm guessing it came with my pump, but I can't reuse it because it's cemented to the white piping I'm throwing away. How to I hook my return pump up to the pvc?

Do I need a ball valve for the piping to go into the sump as well?

Nope nope nope. The return is under pressure from pumps and the returns drain from gravity. Their relative size doen't matter. Drains should always be bigger
I have 4 x 1.5 inch drains for 2 x 1 inch returns.

You can buy reducing bushings at most any hardware store for the drains. Even if it’s 1.5 it won’t drain any faster than the pump is pumping. Id reduce to 1” but no smaller

Also just cut the pipe above the black attachment to your pump and glue on a threaded union

Previous responses are correct, the size of the return does not affect flow rate. Say 1.5" pipe has a max flow rate of 1000 gph and 3/4" has a max flow rate of 800 gph. The return will push 800 gph into the tank and the drain will flow 800 gph to the sump. As long as the drain line is over sized you're fine.
I'd recommend PTFE thread sealant tape. It's less messy when it comes to sealing threads.
The double union shut off valve is probably overkill but can't hurt.

sorry

a 3/4 inch pipe fed by a pump will flow a lot more than a 3/4 in pipe with water running down from gravity so drain pipes are made larger than returns. Especially when you only have one. I would not reduce the drain.

Okay, awesome, thanks so much everyone, I suuuper appreciate the help. I've been trying to figure this out all day!
Since the ball valve already has unions, I guess I don't need it for the ones before the Elbows. I only had those so I couldn't mess up the angle with the Elbows when I cemented the pvc.

Updated diagram with the drain - I feel like I need a ball valve on that, though, to turn it off for maintence?

Also, for the drain - should I put piping in the tank overflow?

Ah, and now I see building a durso style is the way to go probably. Just when I thought I had it all figured out....

Please help.. I don't even know what size pipe connects to this. It looks like the white piece is a reducer from an unknown size to 3/4", which ya'll said I don't need. The second photo means that I need all of my drain piping (for drain and durso) to be 1.25" I believe, correct?

looks like a 1" bulkhead.

I usually run my durso drains as a copy of the Marineland and Aqueon styles

1.25 to the top of the bulkhead then 1" to the sump. I have never tried the same size all the way.

I always figured the big manufacturers did this so the 1.25" pipe would be full and keep "pressure" on the 1" so you wouldn't have lots of bubbles and keep the durso quiet.

Also, the reducer may have the size molded or written on it somewhere

Thank you!! Reducer doesn't have a size on it unfortunately, I just knew the one size connected to the 3/4" pipe since that was labeled, I thought maybe it was one inch but I wasn't sure. Thanks so much! Durso standpipe ordered as well as the plumbing equipment for the return!

Why dont you take the bulkhead to home depot or the store and select the parts you need?

I agree with @Reef-junky here. If you don't mind the look, you can plumb your return over the side of the tank (or drill a new hole if you can). This opens up both bulkheads for draining, so you can use a Herbie style drain with the 3/4 being the full siphon.
Its been a few weeks and you mentioned you were ordering the Durso, so I wouldn't expect any changes at this point, but its something to consider. Having a emergency drain on the tank is a big stress reliever. Single points of failure are something we tend to avoid in this hobby.
