I bought a female melanurus wrasse today. Will it eventually become male if its the only one of its species in the tank?

Supposedly it will eventually. But tell that to mine. I’ve had it since spring and it’s stayed female.

When this transition begins, how long will it usually take?
Honestly, it’s unknown how long transitions take as they can be anywhere from 1 week to years long.

Here was my male radiant just before and during the transiton in 2021.

And he was still transitioning (he was just coming to the end of it) until he unfortunately died in September/October this year.

I added a female in August/September and that pushed the transition along. However we don’t recommend pairs of any wrasse as they generally don’t work out long term.

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
