So I opened it up and it was empty but at the same time full of pods. Not sure what to make of it. I didn't see any way the crab could have exited the molt. I'll do a midnight check to see if I see him.

It’s what all exoskeleton types do. It can be a trip to see but rest assured it is a very good sign that the specimen is healthy and your tank is in a decent place.

Having pests is a separate issue from having the right combination of elements for your hard skinned friends to grow ;)
