I am seriously considering upgrading my sump, but not sure the logistics of doing so. I have a proclear rimless tank that is about 100 gallons that is on the stand that came with the tank and using the existing sump. The design of the existing sump sucks. I have some large areas of wasted space due to how they had it set up for an integrated ATO and refugium etc. I'd also like to upgrade to a trigger systems sump with the built in roller mat for filtering. But, there are some logistics at play.
The stand has these two bars, which I'm sure provide some bracing. They appear to be held in place by two screws at the top and two at the bottom.
And it seems to me these are providing structural support. I have to remove at least the right bar in order to swap the sumps.
What I'm not sure of is - what does this mean for my up and running tank? Do I need to drain half the water? Any water? 1/4 of the water? The stand appears to be wood and aluminum, I'm thinking mostly wood. My concern of course is if I remove that beam (the one the door is attached to), can the stand support the structure for the 20 minutes or so it takes to remove the old sump and put the new one in?
Would love to hear thoughts or if anyone has done stuff like this before.
