Does a reactor for GFO and Carbon really make much of a difference?

I currently have GFO and Carbon in separate media bags (wifes old nylon stocking) that is in the bubble trap weir just before my return pump. I have high phosphates, likely due to leaching from rocks. Would placing the GFO in a reactor with controlled flow provide better phosphate removal?

Thanks in advance
