Does air stone placement depth matter for a power outage ?

I want to add a automatic air stone to my tank but it's visibly ugly so I was wondering if I could place two of them on each opposite of the tank about 2" under the water surface or I need them deeper ?

I would aim deeper - the more dwell time/contact time with the bubbles the more oxygen and circulation you will promote.

Most of the oxygen exchange happens from the surface disturbance but its good to create flow within the tank as a whole from deeper

They don't work very well at shallow depths. You can confirm this with a dissolved oxygen meter. This is because 95% of the total oxygen transfer from a bubble plume is from the bubbles and only 5% is from surface agitation.

Where can I hide them hmm

I could do black stones/tubes at 6" of the bottom.. However I wonder if they're going to clog if I leave them permanently in the tank
