Does anyone have a Maze Angelfish?

If so, reef or Fowlr? If a reef, what kind of corals do you have?

I don’t have a maze angel, but I do have a blue line angel, chaetodontoplus septentrionalis. I’ve currently have him in a temporary tank with softies like mushrooms, leathers and toadstools. Previously I kept him in an SPS tank, but LPS could be where a problem lies but I don’t have experience with that. He’s a model citizen.

And it’s interesting because I come from where they’re found in the wild.

I would love to see Poma Labs breed more of them and I believe that’s in their plans.

There’s been a bit of debate as to the exact genetic input of the Maze Angel, which is a hybrid, but currently the strongest evidence points towards crosses between the Blue-Line (Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis) and an unmarked fish often found in Japan that’s similar to the Grey Poma (C. “cf” melanosoma) but has differences on the tail and maybe a few other spots.

What’s interesting is given the variation within the “Maze” Angels, not all and maybe most hybrids aren’t 50/50 crosses where one parent is fully one and the other is fully another species. The varying phenotypes, some of which lean mostly on the “cf Melanosoma” side with blue scribbles here and there on the body and face, ranging to basically hyped up Blue Lines that sell for lots of $$ in Asia, show a lot of back-crossing from the hybrids into either gene pool.

Bali Aquarich I believe uses Taiwanese broodstock (Mazes are not rare in southern Taiwan) where both parents are C. “cephalareticulatus”, and that’s how we got our captive-bred Mazes.

It’s a similar situation with the very closely related Flavissima complex where Lemonpeel, Half-Black and Eibli mingle and spawn with each other in both their pure and hybrid forms and the hybrids, not being sterile, can breed back into one of their parent populations.

Yea my local store has one, and it is wildly expensive but I like it way more than the blue line. I can’t decide if I should pull the trigger on it or not.

I have a 180g mixed reef, mainly SPS but a few torches and some nems.

Thank you. Yes, I’ve had him 8-9 years at least. He was around 2 1/2” - 3” when I got him and now 4 1/2 - 5” now.

Right now he’s in a tank with softies, mushrooms, toadstool and leather. I previously had him in an all SPS tank. Don’t think I had many LPS, if any in that tank too. He never touched my SPS or softies.

I actually have both! I have a wild caught Japanese blue line and a mazed angel . 300 gal Fowlr as far as angels go they are very passive and pretty -dismissive of each other as well

Blue line I've had about a yr , mazed is fairly new . Blueline is about 6" mazed is 7". Tank is a 300 gallon as far as what else in there see vid below I have a lot of angels, but I was slow and careful about which kinds to avoid infighting. I have a pair of scribbled angels ( male and a female ) a trio of false Personifiers ( male 2 females) and Achilles a baby conspicuous, Japanese interuptus etc. for the most part the angels listed above are pretty mellow but I would still take introduction slow use acclamation boxes and lots of observation. Given my stock everything got at least three days in an acclamation box before releasing to the community. every Fish has its own personality obviously. Given the value of the stock above I did remove a lot of the more notoriously aggressive angelfish before adding these guys. I used to have an emperor , maculosis , blue face , passer stuff like that. But I really don't think there would be an issue housing them with any of those, they are pretty peaceful from what I've seen. The blue line and the mazed are incredibly mellow I got them from NY aquatic!
I consulted them about pairing the two together and they said they did not have any concerns at all they are very laid-back! So if you're concern is them being a bully I would not worry too much. Given my stock I went oversized with my filtration. custom-made wet dry that can handle up to 400 gallons and a bio mass reactor made by BashSea that is rated for up to 500 gallons. Tank dimensions are 72"long, 36 "wide 27" tall. They are slow moving. I put them in the middle between slow and highly active. so if you're worried about having cruising length 6 foot should cut it

Realistically I would highly recommend you talk the guys over at NY aquatics with any concerns or questions you may have about these guys. They have them often, I actually think they just got a huge shipment of juveniles. These guys look awesome as babies too! Mike and Ben are incredibly helpful a majority of my stock came from them always arrives healthy and well packaged.

It has sold, the list price was like 2700 but my guess is I could have gotten it for like 16-1700. He was 7-8”

That sounds about right mine is an orange side variant and I paid about the same. he's about the same size as the one you're referring to. If you're still looking to get one they're definitely worth it , they have so much personality. I got mine from @NYAquatic they bring them in often, handled shipping well.

Have one of these guy and a mazed angel. By far the two best behaved out of my group of angels
