Does that tubing work for uv

Here’s the condition of 3/4” ID braided vinyl tubing after over a half-decade of sitting outdoors year-round in direct california sunlight…

— it’s stiffer, and the exterior of the vinyl is opaque yellow/becoming brittle; but I’d be willing to bet it would still happily hold city water pressure!

The PVC tubing on my fertilizer injectors gets ~3hrs direct sun per-day, and is just starting to go opaque yellow after 12-13 years of continuous service in an outdoor environment!

It should be noted that I’ve also tried yellowing newspaper with direct sunlight, vs a concentrated beam from a 34W germicidal surface sterilizer UV, for a month straight… the difference is night and day! (Pun intended) — the sun releases orders of magnitude more UV in all spectrums than our typical UV water sterilizers!
Braided vinyl is not in the same category as clear or black vinyl, and the results of exposure may very significantly, imo.

Personally, I struggle with braided vinyl because it is difficult for me to get over the barbs on hose connections.

It does seem to be more durable.😇

Oh absolutely! This is why I specified the material type of each example; not all plastics are created equal!

— braided vinyl is actually intended for pressurized applications; we use it in the aquarium hobby predominantly for kink resistance!

Haha pro tips for working with braided vinyl?

— Leave it out in the sun to warm up before installing the barbed fitting(s)

— push the barb into the tubing with one hand on each, and hands braced against inside of knees; this allows you to use the muscles in your legs to apply more force when pushing in the barbed fitting(s)!

I can’t handle Yoga, and never underneath my aquarium stand.

Seriously- I regret getting old and not being limber enough to crawl and work in tight spaces anymore. 😇

I just bought some new silicone tubing for an airline for a pond application because I couldn’t get the old shrunken tubing to extend over the barbed end. It is amazing how much strength has dissipated from tasks I once took for granted.

— I was just playing with 5/16” cable and 1/2” shank lags/turnbuckles; building two tension cable assemblies to install on a leaning 180g tank stand at my LFS tomorrow!
