Hello, it seems my pigmy angel may have a case of ick, it is currently the only fish showing symptoms and I planned on doing a peroxide dose and was wondering if I can dose peroxide without a protein skimmer and if so how I should go about it. The system is 40 gallons, SPS and Softies

Peroxide is an oxidizer and I recommend coppersafe which is safe for the angel at 2.25ppm monitored with a hanna brand copper test kit

There is a 144 page thread/discussion about H2O2 dosing to defeat ich at Humble.fish. I'd navigate over and start reading up on the protocol(s) for this method of treatment.

That’s all well and good, but the process fails in many cases. The primary issue is that peroxide is prescribed at a set dose, but as it oxidizes organics in the water, the dose needs to be adjusted downward. Also, peroxide does not kill the cryptocaryon tomonts, so you need to run it in conjunction with tank transfer.

Peroxide shouldn’t be relied on to cure ich in a display, as it doesn’t kill the trophont or tomont stages at levels that won’t also harm the fish.

If your case is caught early, you can try ich management. It uses peroxide as one component of the process:

A simple web search shows peer reviewed papers (plus associated research) describing H2O2 being lethal to ich tomonts/theronts. The OP asked about this approach and so it was provided sans opinions...

Tomonts have a much higher kill dose than theronts do. That dose is too high for the fish's gills. Over-extrapolation of the literature is a very real issue.

Required at high levels does not confirm outcomes and can be harmful to certain fish
Peroxide is often a short cut that is ineffective

Thank you for the advice I’m open to a different way really whatever will work the best with low risk

@vetteguy53081 so then you both think this would be the better method over the peroxide if it truly is ick?

No, im opposed to Peroxide. Best would be coppersafe at 2.15-2.25ppm and is a safe form of copper
