Dud duncan (or am I the dud)?

I'm starting to dip my foot into LPS after getting comfortable with softies over the last year.
My first was an elegance that went really well, i ended up trading it after it proved too large once fully extended.

Next target was a duncan.
Picked up a small one with 8 or so heads.
Over the next two days they slowly died off - i'd notice polyps floating the tanks periodically when i passed by.
Nitrates at about 25, alk at 8-9. Don't know phos, cal etc.

It's introduction wasn't that smooth - twice it was glued only to be bulldozed by a trochus.
I also noticed my grumpy clown giving it some attention, wouldn't surprise me if it tore a few off.
Also noticed some brown sludgy stuff on some of the heads as they receded (though this wasn't present in the LFS - stress induced?).

I finally just left it in the substrate, that's where it got the most extension.
Just one head left, looks to be going south.

Any thoughts?
I added a torch around the same time and it's been happy. Is there something obvious i'm missing?

I have 2 multi head Duncan's. They love being on the substrate on the sides of the tank nestled up against the rock scape. You need to verify all your water parameters though if you are going to have any success with corals, light and flow also.

Brown sludgy stuff= Brown jelly disease. Not good stuff. Try an iodine or peroxide dip
