I have a Duncan (Duncanopsammia - Toxic Green Stem Duncan Coral cluster 6cm) that extended well for the first 3 weeks after I got it. This morning it did not open and shows some slime coming from the mouth (see pics under white light).
This is a new tank—2 month, fishless cycle. I have not seen any fish bothering it, but of course my tuxedo urchin or the short spiked urchin or a snail could have bulldozed over it. I am wondering if it could be related to dosing 5 ml Flourish Phosphorus yesterday as my Phosphates were 0 (measured with Hanna ULR). This should have increased the Phosphates by less than 0.1 ppm given the 300 l tank.

Details:
Red Sea Reefer Max G2+ 300 with
  • 2x ReefLED 90 at 100% Blue and 100% White for 11 hours
  • Reefer DC Skimmer 300
  • ReefWave 25 Gyre Powerhead at 30% during day and 10% at night
  • ReefRun 5500 Return Pump at 60%
  • ReefMat 500 Automatic Filter Roller
  • Sump with Cheato on opposite photocycle
Stocking so far:
  • few Zoa frags
  • few Favia frags
  • Ultra Hammer Coral 6cm
  • Green Fungia Coral 2cm
  • Toadstool Leather (which has not extended polyps in the last week)
  • GSP

  • 1 x Bicolor Blenny
  • 3 x Fire Goby
  • 1 x Rainfords Goby
  • 2 x Orange Ocellaris Clownfish
  • 1 x Pajama Cardinalfish
  • 1 x Shortspine Urchin
  • 5 x Astrea Turbo Snail
  • 5 x Nassarius Snail
  • 5 x Trochus Snail
  • 2 x Strombus Snail
  • 1 x Brittle Starfish

Water:
  • Temp: 26 C
  • Calcium: 390
  • pH: 8.5
  • Salinity: 1.025
  • Magnesium: 1115 (target 1300, thus dosing daily 40 ml)
  • Nitrates: 8.6
  • Alkalinity: 7.4
  • Phosphate: 0.00 (previously 0.16 and falling, thus added yesterday 5 ml Seachem Flourish Phosphorus)

Daily Dosing:
  • 40 ml Magnesium (to bring up the low Mg)
  • 6 ml Calcium
  • 12 ml KH
  • 4 ml Seachem Flourish Nitrogen

Broadcast Feeding Corals
  • 2 x week: 4 ml AB+
  • Daily: 1 ml Quantum Bio-Enhance
  • 3x week 5 ml Phyto

I'm sorry and I don't know what happened to it, but its on its deathbed, its about done.

I would stop the dosing and bring the tank back to baseline, thats a lot of dosing in a brand new tank. I don't even dose that into my mature tanks.
Thanks! Not planning to add much more. I will reduce dosing.

Interesting rock. What is it made of? Duncan looks like toast...

Is this tank 2 months old? You said the cycle was 2 months. There is a lot going on if this is a 2 month old tank.
I bought the rock as dry rock here in Sydney. It is some kind of concrete coloured. Quite common in the hobby here I understand.

Don’t like big jumps in phosphate and increasing almost .1ppm is a big jump that fast.

That being said, good for 3 weeks and then overnight to that makes me think eaten and/or, excessively bothered

Running a stable .1ppm is a good target, but slowly.

My snails make smile string of my Duncan coral. It is very upsetting. Looks like it caused too much stress to the coral making it blech a white/pale color. I saved mine by moving it from the light to calm down and recover.

Thanks! I was thinking about inverts going over it during the night making it unhappy.

I don't think that duncan is going to make it.

Also that rock looks very bad... like it has a lot of minerals you don't want.
Id run a copper test at the very least, and see if there is any traces of copper.

Also if possible id take a magnet to it, and see if you feel a slight pull for iron.

Thanks! The rock is from the leading reef tank LFS here in Sydney. Very common here. I doubt it is bad, but I will test. Thanks!
