Hey Yall, So just came back from my week trip and my hammer isnt looking too good. It was doing good the day I came back, but couple days later its looking like this, exposed skeleton and missing polyps.

I will send water parameters in a little bit. Havent done it yet. might even answer my own question with this.

Apologies for such bad pictures as well
Thanks

It's pretty much dead at this point. So much exposed skeleton, just a few loose polyps... I doubt it can be saved at this point, sorry ☹️

You wouldn't even have time to analyze what's the underlying issue, at this point it is certainly weak enough to allow all sorts of pathogens to get to it.

Do you have other corals in your tank, how are they doing? Any coral should be just fine for one week on its own, either you have a predator in your tank or something is off in your tank, but I would try to find out what happened. Unfortunately we don't have any info on your tank so can't really offer suggestions at this point. Good luck

Yes I have a Favia colony, I have a toadstool frag, An acan frag and also a Duncan and zoa frag. Had the frags for awhile, they are alive just not growing...?

My parameters are

Alkinity: 7.3
Phosphate: 0.5
Nitrate: 13.8

Nitrates are a bit high any tips on lowering?
Also unfortunately dont have any magnesium or calcium testers on hand.

Besides corals what other livestock do you have? I’ve heard certain generally reef safe fish could go after corals if they are hungry enough

IMO the nitrates are fine, but a water change is the easiest and fastest way to reduce nitrate. I would work on reducing the phosphates though that is getting on the higher side. Which phosphate tester are you using?

The alk is a little low but nothing that will kill a hammer in a week.

What is your light like?

Canthigaster valentini are considered "reef-safe with caution". I think they can sometimes pick at LPS corals.

This would explain why there is no mucus production like you would expect during a bacteria/protozoa infection like brown jelly disease (BJD).

I also read that large water top offs can shock them? Because after my trip I had alot of evaporation so I topped it off like I usually do which is fast top off
