It is only more expensive because you are buying everything separately which means you will have an extra power supply for each light. We have a kit listed on our website and we are in the process of adding the rest of the kit sizes but since the 35 is sold out that is not a priority to add at the moment.
As someone who is planning adding Edges - Scratches head..
Hi, thank you for your active support. This week we are adding the option to purchase the lights without the included power supply which will help cover most of the cost of the upgraded power supply.
Yes upgrading to a larger power supply for daisy chaining is a bit more expensive but in most cases it is not necessary to operate the lights. The most cost-effective option is to use the included power supplies.
The daisy chain feature is an upgrade but we are taking steps to make it as affordable as possible.
Now that’s customer service!I appreciate your patience. We are a small team, and we are still working on making the website as clear and easy to understand as possible.
To answer your question, the Meridian 45 is a 300-watt light, and the Edge 45 is a 120-watt light. If you are using two Edge 45s, that is 240 watts plus the 300 watts from the Meridian 45, which totals 540 watts.
For this setup, you will need the 600-watt power supply to run all the lights at full power. If you connect everything to the standard power supply that comes with the Meridian 45, it will still work, but the power supply will limit the total output. This means you will only be able to run the lights up to the power supply’s max capacity, not beyond it.
It is also important to note that running a power supply at its absolute max capacity for long periods is not ideal. The 600-watt power supply is a better fit because it provides a 60-watt buffer, reducing strain and improving longevity.
That said, if you do not plan on running everything at 100 percent, the total power draw will be lower. For example, running all the lights at 90 percent would reduce the total consumption by about 54 watts, bringing it closer to 500 watts or slightly less.
I completely understand that all the customization options can be a bit confusing, and we will be working on making everything clearer on the website over the next week or two. Thanks for your feedback, and let me know if you have any other questions.
Understood. At first glance I was a bit worried. I’ve been researching competing bars and the edges certainly pack a punch in terms of wattage/par. Over double the power of orphek and 50% more than the blades. It is only more expensive because you are buying everything separately which means you will have an extra power supply for each light. We have a kit listed on our website and we are in the process of adding the rest of the kit sizes but since the 35 is sold out that is not a priority to add at the moment.
The way the kit works is that we remove the individual power supplies that normally come with the lights so you get a kit with three lights but only one upgraded power supply for them all to connect to. Since you bought the lights individually they each came with a power supply and now you are purchasing an upgraded power supply on top of that which is what makes it more expensive.
The only advantage of doing it this way is that if a power supply ever fails you have backups to keep your lights running but that obviously increases the cost since power supplies are not cheap and it’s unnecessary to buy backup power supplies since you’re covered under warranty. In this situation you could either buy a kit from our website that includes everything or reach out to us directly and we can help which is what anyone should do if they ever have questions about Reef Breeders.
Write us a message on our customer service portal on our site and I will give you a call on Monday and resolve any concerns or questions.Understood. At first glance I was a bit worried. I wasn’t aware that the edges came with a power supply as the site does not display this. I’m trying to decide on how to get more coverage and if it would be worth it to add bars or just get another meridian 35? Do you know what the difference would be if the power supply was not included or maybe have an exchange/buyback for the additional power supplies? Trying to get the best par for my buck and I see the Edge offers a lot with the added advantage to angle the light source where the panel couldn’t.
