Effect of tapping return pump for carbon on overflow?

I am considering putting in a T for a 1/2" line to a carbon reactor in my return line. Will this greatly complicate maintaining the level in my overflow? Should I just put it on it's own pump? I have the pump but space is tight in the sump and it would be nice just to install the T (and ball valve for flow control to the reactor) and call it a day..
