Electrician help on gyre wire extension

I’m getting a Jebao 180 gyre.






I need to extend this cord which will potentially get moisture because the pump is on the far side of the tank and need to run it back I have a peninsula.

Will this extension work for this plug?

Looks like it would. Order one and see it it fits.

It’s low voltage, it would be no big deal to cut and extend the 3 conductor cable. You can either solder and heat shrink, or use heat shrinkable crimps for joining the wires, and then heat shrink the whole splice for a watertight seal.

Nope, it is water resistant with that o-ring, but not something you would want to submerge in saltwater!

On the note of heat shrink; it isn’t watertight when submerged, either… even marine grade heat shrink with an internal heat activated glue is not rated for immersion unless it is double-walled!

This is low voltage so the shock risk isn’t there, but the risk of energized wires/connectors rapidly breaking down into copper/etc within your tank is definitely there!

Yeah… There’s probably a better connector type to use for this job… the question would be implementation!

I assume there’s no canopy to hide the cable in?

Alternatively, are you opposed to a 1/2” pipe for electrical conduit?

I don’t have a canopy but do have a screen on top that the cords can rest on top. However I ran this channel for the cords to run through to keep it clean

As you can see the cord is not touching but where the tape is would be where the connection point would be and would probably get some water splash Can’t be for certain if it would touch the water line

Neat idea with the wire channel! It definitely works for unbroken runs of wire, but I don’t think it would be wise to leave a connection in such a salty, humid area!

I think you could adhere plastic surface mount pipe clamps (possibly with silicone, or screw them to something that silicone bonds well to), then clip your thin pipe, tubing, or possibly PEX hose into those as a dry conduit!

It's good to be concerned about your electrical wiring for sure, do a good job with good materials and it will reward you with years of trouble free service. I personally think it would be ok to splice the cable to make it longer, however it would absolutely not be able to be submerged. If you soldered the individual wires and heat shrunk them, then heat shrunk again over the 3 splices, you'd have something that would be very immune to splashing with salt water occasionally. Putting it inside of a tube is a great idea but it looks like your space above the water line is limited, I can see why you are concerned.

The three prong connector didn’t fit. I want to just extend the current cord. What would are the supplies and steps I need to take? I will run the wire through some type of conduit to ensure it doesn’t get wet

I need to think through the conduit part. I do take off my lid about once a week to do some maintenance. Need to be able to re,ove the cord from the conduit easily since I clean the pumps every 1-2 weeks

You can use heat shrinkable splices and then follow up with another heat shrink tube over that for decent protection. If you stagger the splices it doesn’t make such a big splice so it’ll fit into conduit. Don’t use cheap splices the heat shrink portion is no good. Adhesive lined splices are the best to use.

You can also solder and heat shrink but we use the crimpable splices at work daily and they work well. It’s up to you.

Once crimped you just use heat to shrink the tubing with adhesive inside. I use a butane torch but you can use a Bic lighter as well. Just go slow and don’t melt it. Lots of instruction on YT for splices.

Remember to slide the heat shrink over the wire BEFORE you crimp on a splice, if you don’t you’ll have to cut it off and use another one, ask me how I know

I wonder if all their pumps use the same three prong connection. Going to try this. Doesn’t look like there is a one less than 10’.

That would be really cool to have a readily available extension for Jebao pumps and powerheads. Let us know how it worked.

You may still want to heat shrink the connection, you can buy large adhesive lined shrink tube on amazon, harbor freight etc. It can be removed if you are diligent if you need to disconnect the extension.

Now to figure a conduit to mount underneath my lid.
