I asked this in the chemistry forum and was told to ask it here instead:

I lowered my PO4 down from .2 to .05 using Tropic Marin Elimi NP dosing 2mL per day into a roughly 100 gal tank over 2 months. (Hanna Checkers) This was the recommended max dose. Per my understanding I’m ready to swap from Elimi NP to Bactobalance. I’m a bit confused by the instructions because the max dose appears to be doubled on the instructions (max dose is 4mL for 100 gals). Should I just convert 1 to 1 on the Bactobalance. Do I start at 2 mL per day? Or do I go to the max dose (4) because my tank required the max dose of Elimi NP?

My understanding is that Elimi NP and Bactobalance are the same product just with N and P added to it to prevent bottoming out nutrients. If this is correct then would 4mL of Bactobalance be equivalent to 2 mL of Elimi NP?

Let’s see if @Hans-Werner or @Lou Ekus can elaborate on the transition between the two products.

I may be tempted to use same dose and increase or decrease it based on the trends. But that is just my opinion…

Please convert Elimi-NP to NP-Bacto-Balance 1 : 1. As you mention, it is the same carbon source, the same concentration of organic carbon.

The reason for the lower maximum dosage of Elimi-NP is that we recommend to lower the nutrient concentration very slowly and carefully to avoid any problems. NP-Bacto-Balance has a more moderate effect due to the added nutrients. This also lowers phosphate concentration more slowly and avoids problems with sinking phosphate concentrations.

Perhaps a stupid question. If it’s the same carbon source and same concentration, then wouldn’t adding N and P dilute the concentration?

No, the proportion of N and P compounds is small and can be dissolved in the liquid without diluting the C concentration.

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn’t questioning your answer just trying to understand. Really enjoying your products and your help. Thank you again
