Hi all,

Hoping someone can help me. In a separate thread I started on 7/19 I posted this:

For the past couple of days my hammer has not been opening up fully as usual. Nothing new and my parameters have not changed significantly. In fact a little better than in the past.

My Goniopora also stopped opening. The other corals I have such as an Acan, blastomussa, Leptoseris and Duncan seem fine.

I have a 32 g Biocube about 18 months old

7/17
Salinity 1.026
Alk 8.6
Nitrate 6.5
Phos 0.17
Ca 400
Mg 1300

7/17
DT
Salinity 1.026
Alk 7.7 (this was dosed with 2 part)
Nitrate 8.4
Phos 0.17

First two pics were taken on 7/19
The others are what it normally looks like.

I recently learned that I have a lot of vermatid snails and I broke a few that were close to them.

On 7/21 with the advice of those on R2R I fed the hammer. I fed reef roids and LRS frozen.

I will continue.

On 7/22 my parameters were:

Salinity 1.026
Alk 8.1 (dosed to bring to 8.5
Nitrate 8.4
Phos 0.1
Ca 390 (dosed to bring to 420
Mg 1350 (dosed 8.7 to bring to 1450 as suggested on R2R)

On 7/22 my hammer looked like this:

Is this BJD?

DT
Dipped hammer in peroxide and then in iodine and put back in tank. Used pipette to blow in the areas of brown.

When I placed it back in the tank it looked like this:

On 7/25
I put some carbon in worrying that my toadstool frag may be giving off some toxins.

As of yesterday now more than a week when I starting noticing it still looks like this.

Yes. And the shrimp is quite new. I have had in a Qt for some time but it has been in that tank since 7/4.
Just watch him.
You posted a 1.1dkh drop in Alk same day?
That’s either a typo on date or an instability issue….

They don’t need regular feedings especially when unhappy.

It hangs out in the cave under the hammer.
But does that hammer look ill or annoyed?

I’m rather new to this. I have had the hammer since October and it’s been beautiful (see first post) up until now.

I don’t normally feed. I did because it was advised. It doesn’t seem to show a feeding response.

Can you post a full tank pic in white lights? Maybe even a short video

What kind of lighting and flow do you have?

Good, don’t, you don’t have to directly feed them, they can pull what you can’t see from the water column.

I feed these maybe once a month if that, a small cloud of roids over them, no flow.

Do you think the shrimp is causing the hammer to remain closed? Should I try to catch it and possbly isolate in a hatchery/isolation box?

Does it seem ill or just annoyed?

Shrimps can annoy corals especially when you feed, they may try and steal the food from the coral, sometimes this is just an annoyance, but can also lead to death.

Cant say for sure anything, but I got the impression that the coral has been fine and the shrimp a recent add.

You can always pull that shrimp as a test.

I removed all shrimps for this very reason.

Thanks for the response.
I tried pulling the shrimp But couldn’t. I have a Biocube and Space is tight. Couldn’t lure him out. Was going to take out and put in an isolation chamber.
Not sure if there is any special trick to catching the shrimp.

Other thought I had was maybe take the coral and put it a 10 gallon QT with 1/2 water from DT and half fresh salt water to see if isolated it can improve.

Any thoughts on that?

I did a 30% water change yesterday to see if that helped but as of yet didn’t see a difference.
