Hi everyone.

I have a new emperor Angel, is currently on coppersafe at 2.25 for quarentine, and I noticed this weird grow on one of its fin.

Any idea what It is?

It seems to have grow overnight, as I took some photos yesterday and It was not there.

The fish act normal.

Could It be lympho? A clownfish had It in the same quarentine tank about a year ago. But the clownfish grow was white.

Thanks.

This is bacterial and may have stemmed from an injury and will require treatment using seachen Kanaplex which is easily absorbed by the fish. If this is a treatment tank, I suggest removing the rock especially appearing to be lava rock

This is either lymphocystis or a rare fungal infection.

Lymphocystis is usually grayish white, but coloration depends on the tissue it is growing from - it can be brownish, or even the fish’s body color in some cases. However, while lmphocystis is very common in this species, it doesn’t grow like this in 24 hours. So, if you’re certain it wasn’t there before that, it isn’t lymphocystis.

The fungal disease is brownish and grows faster than lymphocystis. It typically starts from an injury. It needs to be treated with formalin dips, but that is tricky to do in a home situation due to its toxicity.

Generally, lymphocystis and the fungal disease are “additive”, the lesion grows larger than the fish’s original tissue. Bacterial diseases are “subtractive”, the bacteria eat away at the fish’s tissue, creating a lesion that is sunken.

Thanks. No way to get formalin here in spain. Would Ruby rally pro helps in any way?

It might - but you’d need to dose it in the tank, plus a daily one hour dip (with an air stone) in rally pro at 3x the tank dose.

Just noticed that same grow, with the same color, in the other fin too, just smaller. Does that point to lympho or the fungal disease?

Thanks.

Is the fish still using its fins with ease? Or is the growth impending the use of its fin? Can you get a picture of the other fin?

Something to have on had for lymphocystis, that can at times help subdue the growth is Easy Reef DKI - 1.3 Beta Glucan infused pellet food. It’s not a guarantee but it can help.

Formalin is not easy to get a hold of outside of the states. But Ruby can be used as a bath as suggested by Jay. I personally do 3ml per gal for 30 min.

Is the growth off the body or directly fin?

It swims normally. I'll give him a ruby rally pro bath after I'm done with copper just in case.

Just to clarify, if this IS the fungal disease, you need to treat it now, not wait until the copper treatment is done.

If it is lymphocystis, you do nothing and it will resolve in six weeks on its own.

I think based on what you said that it is lympho, the fish wasn't injured, less alone on both fins, and it is acting completely normal, eating like a champ.

So for now I'll continue with copper as normal.

Thanks for the help.
