Good morning all!

I'm brainstorming my shark tank, and would like some input from other shark keepers. The original intent was to have a 500-700g wide footprint tank on a custom stand so I could actually watch my sharks like my other fish, but I've seen people here repurpose swimming pools for much cheaper, though it would limit viewability to above only. For those of you who use a 'pond' made from a large swimming pool, how big do you typically use diameter wise? Do you have to line the pool on the inside so nothing in the material leeches into the water, or is that not a problem?

I have some ideas here for potential stock as well. Does anyone have experience keeping any/all of these together?

Yes, I'm aware I'll need a lid if the eel is involved. Any other stocking ideas of large, slow fish are also welcome.

I didn't know triggers were shark-safe, I thought they were nippers. What about the pool concept instead of a standard tank?

They are, sorry I forgot to mention that. Eppe sharks, bamboo sharks, and generally any shark of that size and larger should be fine. However, smaller ones, like coral cat sharks and baby sharks, are known to get nipped at. But honestly, in a large pond, they’ll probably be okay, you mostly see that kind of behavior in tanks.

If i had the money and space i would definitely do a saltwater pool, it will be so much better for the fish and be so much cheaper. If you end up doing it definitely put a net on top because ive seen eels jump out of them before.

I’ve seen tons of people set up freshwater or saltwater pool ponds with just fish and sand, no liner, and it works fine as long as there haven’t been any chemicals used in it. Although, If you’ve got the budget a liner wouldn’t hurt, it’ll make the pool more durable and keep any leftover chemicals out if there happen to be any. But honestly, you’ll probably be fine without one.

I've kept these together in a touch tank, with the exception of the zebra eel. But I've kept zebra eels together with epaulettes in a different tank. I'd be wary of keeping horseshoe crabs with zebra eels unless the crabs were really large.

So it'd be better to just leave the eels in one of the FOWLRs? Would the horseshoe be bothered by the sharks/rays? I thought those guys were more interested in crustaceans than fish, but a horseshoe crab is a little different then the crabs they typically eat. Or would the horseshoe need to be a certain size? I was thinking of getting the horseshoes first, then adding rays, then sharks last, probably newly hatched. Everyone would start out as small as I can get them, unless any one of them would get picked on by the others by being too small. The horseshoe wouldn't be likely to accidently tear the side of the pool, would it?

I can't say if the horseshoe crabs would damage the pool sides, depends on their size and what the liner is made out of.

If you have a size for the crabs and the fish, I can better "guess" as to how this might work out.

I do not Epi’s but I do have two white spotted bamboo sharks and a marble cat shark. They are in a 10’X5’ aquarium with monos, two butterflies, Miniatus grouper, blue spotted grouper, dogface puffer, Stars and Stripes puffer, and a yellow headed eel. I am not a fan of the swimming pools as they are built to be temporary. I would suggest building a structure structure out of wood and using a pond liner to water proof. Tank makes can be challenging due to feeding. My sharks are not aggressive unless it is feeding time. Some of the fish need to eat more often than the sharks, so you have to plan feeding amounts and type to avoid confrontation. A snowflake eel was killed when it grabbed the same piece of food as the shark.
