I’m new to reef building. And I’m building a new reef tank. I started to thread up about the build, but have lots of questions about equipment for this building. I’ve got a 22 gallon long tank that will be going to a 20 gallon sump tank. I want to do an external overflow. I have made up a DIY overflow box, but wanted some input on if it’s best to DIY that or just buy one premade. The dimensions of my external flow box are 12 inches wide 3 inches deep and 7 inches tall. My plan is to have an internal overflow box that I’m gonna make. I was gonna put rubble inside of that to try to have an internal space for copepods to be able to hang out and hide and grow. I will drill a few small holes in the bottom so they can come in and out. I planned on having two sets of weirs on the right and left side of the internal flow box that will lead to two baffles, it’ll take the flow down through the rebel and then passively drain out of the pass-through to the external flow box. If that makes sense, I’m wondering what your thoughts on that are.
I also need some input on a good protein skimmer, I wanted the simplicity 120 but thought that might be too much for my system.
And lastly, what would you suggest as a good DC pump as a return pump?
The first picture is my old tank. I just took it apart. I made the internal overflow box. I added this picture just as a reference to show how my internal copepod factory would look like.
