ok thanks! are there any pipes that should go into the chamber the skimmer's in? The chamber you all keep recommending for me to put the skimmer in doesnt have any pipes that lead into the tank.
It's confusing I know. The pump pulls water into the skimmer. Foam is made and goes to the top cup. That red pipe is for the water to flow out of. The water in your sump is from the overflow and it goes through the chambers to the return pump which returns water to the aquarium.

So the sump has a cycle of where the water goes to first and last.

No pipes

Example of skimmer in a sump chamber:

huh. How does the clean water the skimmer produces get into the tank then, if the chamber is closed off?
It removes pollutants. That red pipe should have an opening at the bottom. That's were the water will flow out of. If the bottom is blocked, water will flow from the top and you don't want that.

I'll try to draw the flow.

Water goes through the various chambers of the sump either through slots/baffles or over the side from one area to the next. You may have to elevate your skimmer on something so it doesn't sit too low. There will be a preferred water level for the sump to work properly.

There is an outflow/return that sends the clean water out of unit. The collection cup on top retains the skim

Clearly this is a new start. Fill it up and get the return pump going. Then figure out which compartment the skimmer will fit into. The closer to the filter socks the better.

The GFO reactor you can figure out in 2022 or never unless you are overstocking fish.

this is probably an ridiculous question, but i fill my sump with saltwater correct? At the correct salinity? Or just rodi freshwater?
Full salinity. This very water will flow to and from your tank via return pump

I will make a video for you, and your questions I'm sure will be answered. If not, I'll even stream live so you can ask questions live.
