Ever got stung by an Urchin?

No - he was miserable though and this was on day two of a 2 or 3 week surf trip. He had no business being on it given the breaks we were surfing, but insisted he could handle it. The incident was the result of him being unable to paddle out of the rip used to get past the shore break and having to walk in on the reef. He got smashed into the reef by an overhead wave. It was insane and he is lucky to have escaped only with terrible reef rash and urchin stings and no other serious injury or worse. He did not surf another day on the trip… his board was broken anyway, it got smashed too :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

Haven't been poked yet but I've had a long spine in the tank for about 9 months now. It's gotten pretty big and makes me nervous every time I need to put my hands in the tank!

Many, many urchins over a lifetime of surfing. I have a few chunks in my heel atm actually. It is correct they will eventually expel naturally but until then they give you a little reminder that they’re in there when you’re going bare foot.

Live acro chunks are worse in my opinion. Fire coral isn’t great either.

Stepped on an urchin in Peurto Vallarta a couple years ago. The after effects were the most annoying thing ever. The imbedded spines are impossible to extract. I did nightly foot soaks in epsom salt for months. The spines took a full year to fully expel out of the ball of my foot.

When I was a kid, I stepped on one. The last bit of spine stayed in for weeks. I can’t really remember why my parents didn’t dig it out. lol

LOL! That HAD to hurt. Yeah, my parents had no issue with that. And I learned how to do it in the process. Whenever my wife needs a splinter dug out it's JOHN! I'm very good at this.

Got a decent length long spine urchin spine in my hand when I worked at a lfs. Grabbed some vinegar and let the impaled area soak in it. Spine and pain were gone in about 30 minutes

Yeah, when i was diving a long spine embedded in my leg and because i was wearing a wetsuit i didn’t see what the pain was. Fast forward a couple weeks and the spine was still in my leg and had created a hole under the skin, i then went and got it removed but it was really nasty

Submersion of stung limb in hottest water you can handle is the general go to for most marine stings.

Urchin no. But stingray, lionfish, nettle jellyfish, and fire coral. Fire coral was definitely the worst.

Some of the more exotic urchins out there are incredibly toxic. Many years back, a friend tried to brush one away from something the was trying to reach in his tank. The pain ran up his arm. He said it felt like he was having a heart attack.
