I would say he was dead, but he is standing up straight...

Mine does it at night and only during the day when he's shedding which he does every couple months. Totally normal.
 
He's sleeping....but you may want to get those palys away from him.

anyways Those polys grow naturally at the trees base... Those ones on mine have been there a few years.

Hey liq (your new nickname..lol) I have one and nothing is growing at the base of mine. I can't see the base of yours very well, but that looks like aiptasia at the base.?
 
Those look like aiptasia to me in that picture. The first picture, those are palys for sure.
