Ever since I out in a new pump the temp has been climbing. It's showing 83 now.

I'm wondering if I could drill a bunch of 1/2" holes in the top to let the heat out. I already took the back side of the lid off.

An open top and new light are not an option. I'm really looking for something I can do without any more spending.

Get a different pump. It should not be getting that hot submerged.
NEWA mj pumps are good quality at a good price.
That's what I was trying to avoid, I used the stock lump from my wb 20 cube and the flow is great.

I will check out new pumps though before I start drilling.
