Hey guys,

1st post here and really still learning about all things marine.

I have a fluval 207 external filter and was wondering if anyone had used this or a similar one with their setup and how you’d found it and how often you needed to clean it out ?

Also add anything into canister to help with it

Thanks in advance

Cannister filters are not very popular because of some of the differences between reef keeping and fish tank keeping.

In a nutshell, "dirt" in a fish tank is "coral food" in a reef tank. "Most folks" use no mechanical filtration on reef tanks for this reason.

You can use it normally if you have to, but it will need to be cleaned frequently (probably weekly or more often) for it not to become a problem.

Thanks for the reply.

I’m using it just now until I built a sump for it which hopefully won’t be too long.

Just trying to understand it all and thought I would use the canister in mean time

It's probably fine for short term use....it's the cleaning requirements that kill the deal, but in a short time there wouldn't be that many cleanings.
