Progressives work well for 9.5/10 people. Some don't like the narrow usable channel down the center of the lens or just have issue aiming their nose to find the focal sweet spot, in which case, your options are to use a bifocal (easier to use for most and wider usable area), or one of the other options of "switching back and fourth" you mentioned.
You are aware they have bifocal contacts, right? Your OD should've mentioned it but, after working with about 100+, about 70% of them are jokes in my experience. Might help to sit down with a licensed optician about your options (and not one mainly motivated by sales, stay FAR away from anything owned by Luxottica or the Walton family).
