I made a huge mistake yesterday. A year ago when I ordered some coral they threw in an extra one...a Captain Jerk. These things exploded and were taking over a large section of my rockscape. So, yesterday I decided to rip them out. Well, the crap this thing put into the water ended up killing a bunch of my coral. And, somehow even after wearing gloves and eye protection, I got some of it in one of my eyes which gave me a horrible case of conjunctivitis (red, swollen, itchy and stuck shut this morning). Lesson learned....never put that coral or any similar stuff in your tank, and if you ever need to remove something similar, do it in very small batches and absolutely ensure that you NEVER, EVER remove your eye protection BEFORE you remove your gloves and wash up.

Dang. I have some in my tank. If anything, i am trying to get them to grow faster. I also never wear any protection when handling them. Once i even handled them with an open wound on my finger. Are they really that dangerous?

Easily the worst paly I have had in my tanks. Kills or ticks off everything but acros. Stylo, monti, most lps but pectinia all die anytime you try and remove them and dont use carbon.

They don’t kill till you try to remove them. They then instantly release that toxic soup into the tank. Before I removed them they were just taking over all the rockscape.

You hit it right on the head…killed my large montiporas, stylos that were looking great. It ticked off my lps, but they are still alive. Why no carbon? I had been told to use it for sure when removing anything or fragging.

No, I was saying anytime you frag them and do not use carbon you will have an issue.

Ahhh, I misread what you said. Yep, I had my carbon reactor running with new ROX carbon. There was just too much of that crap in the water for it to handle it all. Major lesson learned.

So I put carbon filter pads over my sock holes so every bit of water has to pass through it. Still not perfect but getting rid of all of them was.

So I've had an about face on this topic. So much so that I had just bought, maybe a month ago, a very nice size paly colony on its own rock. 3x6"... There's no sand island I could put it on, so it was on top of my rock work.

I had not thought that they would spread off the rock its on, to my other rock. I knew they were dangerous, but I really failed to think that they would spread and grow just like zoas. It has been tossed.

Not only can you get a nasty rash, breathing issues if you happen to inhale any of it, I know of one person that is legally blind now in one eye from them.

Hadn't thought of this either, but sadly they are marketed as beginner corals as well.

No thank you.

Yep, I got mine as a free add in when I ordered other beginner coral. I honestly didn’t even know what it was. I really wish I had just tossed it, but was new and excited to have an extra coral. I really got lucky this stuff didn’t hurt me worse. I have more to remove but am waiting a while, and when I do it, I’ll do it in very small bunches with protection and wash up instantly when done. This stuff scares the hell out of me now. It will all be gone as soon as possible and I’m only putting known coral into my tank going forward.

If its on rock and you're trying to remove it, personally I'd toss the rock and buy a couple replacement rocks from gulf live rock or something.

It isn't worth the risk.

It’s on my rock scape….that is one of the problem with this stuff….it spreads easily. I have it on an island as ell which I’ll chuck.

I have these and been contemplating getting rid of them. They grow too fast and to now read they are the highly toxic ones, I’ll be forming a GET OUT plan now.

Main reason I never put any zoas in my tank. Eventually I’ll put a zoa colony on a small hand sized rock. Never put them on a main rock they will take over and cause a headache. Poly ain’t no joke that stuff can put you in the hospital
