I got the Valves from a local plumbing store that all the reef people go to. I know it is a ball valve for sure the cheapest one was like 6.99 and the one I bought was 23.99

I shall be working on this plumbing lay out. I was given the idea to do two 45 elbows leading into the stand that way it is a more gradual slope and not allowing gurgling

Are you using unions for just incase instances when you need to plumb something else in?
Do you guys have some good suggestions for tank builds with good plumbing explanations? I'm confused as to why the overflow wouldnt be used.


I'm interested to see how your tank is going to turn out. I've got my Columbus Blue Jackets hat on now too. Dont know if thats a good thing but all my extended family is from there...

Ha ooooo the blue jackets! Good thing my whole family is from Pittsburgh!! Go pens!

Ha but anyways. The overflow is just a drain for the water I'm your tank. My overflow was monstrous! So I took it out to make room for my rock work that I wanted to do. And I'm very happy that I did. So i plugged up the existing drain and return and then I drilled another hole for a new drain!

So that's why I took out the over flow. For my rock work.

But ya I'm excited too! Just waiting on my sump to be built and then I'll be ready to go!

What I would do

Ha that's exactly what I was thinking. But I actually got an idea that I like a lot that I'm going to try. From the T joint I'll add a barb for 1.5" reinforced vinyl tubbing and run that down to the sump allowing it to be quieter.

But I'll have part for both to see what I like more

In that picture you have of your plumbing the one on the right side (the drain?), I noticed its pretty low in the tank do you put something on the inside of the tank that extends up and will act as an overflow?

Also wondering on how you decided on the cutoff for the amount of fish you'll have. I have a 55gallon and am trying to find that limit out.

Ha I always hope that the blue jackets do well but I never get my hopes up so it's all good

But right it was for real estate. And also better flow. With that big bulky overflow it cuts off a lot of flow to the other side of the tank which would mean more ugly powerheads!

And yes I'll have an elbow pointing up and to The right with a strainer on it.

And for fish idk how I decide lol. I used to be all about fish and I would get way to many but now I've found a good group of fish I like that I think will look good in the tank and at the same time keep the tank peaceful and not busy

I've read about people using the krylon spray paint for plumbing inside the tank with no ill effects. Google reef safe paint or krylon reef tank and you will see the info. Looking good man

Also you can use valspar paint for plastic. Check my plumbing on my thread as well if you like what you see. $5 a can.

I was busy with swap stuff, so I haven't checked in for a few days. Looking great! It's one thing to get good advice and blow it off because it's not what you wanted to hear. It's refreshing to see someone actually research and incorporate when someone gives them sound advice. It's coming along nicely now!
