Here is a pic of my yellow tang currently in QT running copper safe. Started sporting feathery, frayed looking fins. I have an ammonia badge hold steady and do 25% water changes every other day(ish). Eating OK.
Thoughts?

Any other fish in with it? That looks like classic bite marks.

There is a clown and a couple chromis. The clown is also starting to show similar fraying. The clown will sometimes get after the chromis but never the tang who is a regular nurse maid to everyone :)

Bacterial fin rot can cause edging on fins, but it isn't so sharply defined like that. I can't come to any other conclusion other than they are bite marks. One trick is to set up your cell phone to video the tank, then leave the room. Watching the video may tell you who the culprit is.

Are they just green chromis? I can't think that they would do this.

Thanks Jay. This is the male clown that I moved to QT on Friday (first pic) and later died Sunday (second). No visible issues at the time - just acting squirly and not eating when I moved him.
Definitely something going on - trying to get a handle on it. I like the bacterial infection premise - I have some Kana on the way just in case. Trying to get all fish out of DT to run fallow for 90 days - I have 1 chromis left in DT that I can’t catch.

Sorry - reread your post - yes, green chromis. They mostly pick in each other ;)

If you think this is a primary bacterial infection, you could try kanaplex, but you might want to combine it with a second antibiotic, furan-2 or Maracyn 2.

Clowns eyes look very cloudy - they’re usually very black.
Is there a downside to prophylactic antibiotics?

They need to be dosed in a treatment tank as opposed to your display aquarium. There is a risk of pathogens developing a resistance to antibiotics, but that only happens if you dose the same tank over and over again.

Yes. I’m dosing in QT only. I’ll look up the other antibiotics you recommended.
Thank you again.
