At my job, they only cover $100 for the packages they lose. Granted we are mailing stock certificates and paperwork and not live animals so it may be different for you.
 
I’ve had several fed ex delays on coral... they never covered one bit of lose
 
You would need to declare a shipment value and or add insurance to the shipment at time of shipping, however when you do this the cost of shipping increases but you can then make a claim when there is a problem
