I'm currently taking some programming classes and one of the projects is to build a web application. Here's my idea, let me know if you think it would be useful or if maybe something like this already exists.
I'm working on a project that would allow you to pre-search forums like this one. (not just reef sites, but any forums really) Let's say that you own a business, coolguycorals.com and you want to keep track of who's talking about your business on the forums. You could frequent the various reef forums and search periodically for your url or business name to try to find threads that mention you. Maybe they are threads where someone is just talking about your business and it would be good for you to chime in mentioning the sale you're having. Or maybe it's someone posting about a bad experience they had, and it would be good for you to know this so you can get into the conversation and do some damage control/customer service, etc... Maybe you don't own a business and you're just looking for a specific coral for hardware for sale and want to be notified when someone posts it for sale.
So instead of visiting the forums and searching for this stuff all the time. I'm thinking of an application that you would just enter in your search criteria, and then when someone does post about this, you get an email notification. I'm in the process of setting up a new tank, and was thinking how handy this would be on the forums. I already do it personally on craigslist, basically I just have it email me whenever anything with reef in the text is posted for sale. I've been able to acquire some hardware very cheap this way because I was notified right away and beat others to it.
What do you folks think about something like this? Any ideas/feedback/suggestions welcome.
