Filter media

I'm using the Seachem Tidal 35 for my filter. Would it be a good idea to replace the filter contents with small pieces of live rock? I saw it mentioned in another thread where someone had a canister filter and people suggested adding live rock to it.

I didn't want to hijack that thread. Would this be a good idea? Any drawbacks?

Live rock is recommended for canisters to do away with the mechanical filtration media which is very tedious to clean, and inevitably gets neglected in a canister filter!

In a HOB filter, where mechanical filtration is easy to clean daily to every few days; best bet is leaving that in it!

I ran a Fluval 110 for years like that. Good idea....? Its not going to hurt....but the water flow will be too fast for any anaerobic's to grow, so really end of day, it will just be a mechanical filtration...but you will get growth (sponges, pods etc) in there....you can do, but don't clean it out much.....

I had a seachem 110 on the back of my 29 gallon, it provided all the flow I needed. I had if filled to the brim with seachem matrix in a filter mesh bag. I had the basic sponge at the bottom and that was it. Just rinsed the stuff in dirty tank water to get the superficial stuff off once a month and threw it back in. It's now the same media I have in my AIO.
