I personally haven't used gels. But here's a good video...

The downside is you've got a nice lens but are now shooting through cheap plastic.
And you lose light, so you'll have to slow down your shutterspeed, or open up your aperture more, or raise your ISO, or a combination.

What I do.... Set your nikon to 10,000k which I believe is as high as you can go, then you can adjust wb further in lightroom, if you shoot in raw format.

It also helps greatly if you can tweak your light's spectrum before shooting. Make it more white... like 12k-14k.
