I have a tideline aquarium. It has duel overflow with mesh socks. I am using this conversion kit to switch to standardized socks.

I am not concerned about filtering every ounce of water as I have plenty of LR and sand with a smaller bioload. I am keeping the socks for now just for polishing the water.

My question is could I drill a few 1/2 hole in the sock holding plate to keep a high flow regardless of the socks restriction?

Good idea? Bad idea?

You could I suppose but not sure what's to be gained. Socks should be able to take max flow and if they clog then tray should overflow. I guess it would allow you to keep socks in longer without extra flow noise from overflow but then why have socks at all? I don't run socks and only occasionally sponges after a tank cleaning session.

Second issue could be that you create flow noise from those holes draining. You may have to have a tube or something to prevent splashing.

Thanks, good thoughts to consider.

They way the chambers are the 2 overflows can't drain over the main chamber. All water must be through the bottom. My thinking was that as those socks slowed the flow the pumps could run drown and dry. If I had extra flow holes at least some water would bypass the socks if necessary. Maybe I will make a couple mock plates with some extra plexi glass and could test a few different ideas to see what happens.

Do you have powerheads in the display? If yes, do they provide enough flow to meet your needs? If yes, you do not need to have a high sump to tank turnover rate at all.

I currently am running about 1.5x sump to tank turnover... but close to 20x in the DT with two 2kgyres running about 70%
