Filter sock questions

Sump has been up and running for three weeks. I have two fire fish and a small cleanup crew in a 120 gl reef tank. Tank is two months old and cycled. Sump is a market eShopps sump. My questions are:

How often should I clean the socks? I have seen others comment every 24 to 48 hours and then others say they wait till they get clogged. I have gone about five days and I wouldn’t say they were clogged or all that dirty frankly.

I have two sets that I switch out when I clean them. I take the old out and put the new, reused socks in. I clean in the kitchen sink with hot tap water from the sprayer. I have seen comments where people put them in the washer. I have a high efficiency washer that has a reservoir for detergent. How do I know the detergent isn’t still in the washer when I wash the socks? Do you wash them on a full cycle or just a rinse cycle?

Lastly, how often should I buy new socks? Should I soak the reused socks before switching them out?

I bought a pack of 12 off amazon. Mine only last 3 days before the are clogged and water is flowing from the top, thats when I change them. I throw mine in the washer with bleach full cycle on hot, dry them, and the air dry for a few days.

There is no set time to change a sock. You have a light bioload and probably feed minimally so they should last a while. Once you see the sock turning brown would be a good indicator. I left left my socks so long the start spilling over the top. (Not a good idea though) It is good to have 3 or 4 to help the rotation.

I had an eshopps r300. You can put them in the washer but do not use soap. I threw mine in the washer and dumped bleach on them. I ran a short cycle with hot water and an extra rinse. Once done I would mix some prime with water and dumped that on them and ran another cycle but just rinse. For a final safety I would wash them in a 5 gallons bucket with prime. Seems like a lot, but washer does all the work.

Ive bought socks from www.clearchoiceaquatics.com. they have great prices.

I change my socks every few days, try not to go so long they overflow. Replace them when they start to get holes in them [emoji23]

Hey stanleo, Concerning the washer. You could just fill the detergent res water & run a short cycle this will rinse it out . I also worry about residue but think after a rinse cycle it's not too bad.
Would be interesting to take a sock out of the washer soak in a little ro water & test for Po4.
It's the terrible strong fragrances in some detergents I worry about.
