I have a fluval evo 13.5 gallon and I was curious what would be good to catch debre. Filter floss, cotton balls, pillow cotton? What would work good?

don't use cotton balls, they'll come apart and/or clog very easily. Filter floss/poly fill is a great idea. It's nice and cheap so you can just throw it away and replace regularly. I use this on my current build:

I have slowly become a proponent of not having much in the way of mechanical filtration. As long as you have the flow to keep things suspended and do an occasional spot cleaning during water change corals love the detritus
Do you have any experience with chemi elite?
