Alright guys. Some of you may have noticed I am a bit of a multi-tasker (or to put it more bluntly, scatter-brained) when it comes to reefing projects. So, after discussion with my VERY supportive wife, we have agreed to convert our office/guest bedroom/gaming room into a gaming/fish room. This thread will replace the threads below, so I will only have to maintain this thread and my main display tank thread, which saves me time, and hopefully allows me to produce more entertaining and helpful content for all of you, my R2R comrades! Below you will find links to and photos of the threads/projects this consolidates, and a prelim floorplan for the room. I will also be asking for advice here as I get going. I look forward to sharing this project, The TX REEF Reef Room (feel free to suggest other names 😆) with you all, and will be documenting here as well as on YouTube. As always, all feedback, whether supportive or ridicule, is welcome!

  • I am also humbled to have secured some support from a few vendors whose products I already use and trust! Please refer to post #2 for the current list of project supporters, and feel free to reach out to me for any recommendations on their products as well.
  • Equipment and livestock listing will be maintained on post #3.

I am planning to replace the carpet and repaint the room. I’m thinking tile. Here are a couple renderings I worked on with AI. What do you think? I can’t decide if I want plain and neutral with white marble tile, or blue with blue marble tile for the oceanic theme.

My first bit of equipment has arrived from Hygger! I have a cleaning and water change kit, a 25-watt crossflow pump (gyre, my favorite type of wavemaker) and an interesting and powerful return pump, a "cuboid" 75 watt DC pump. As a reminder, feel free to use code TX_REEF for 10% off all Hygger products at https://www.hygger-online.com/shop/

Thanks! Yes, it is a lot of blue, I'm still toying around with the design. I have at least a few weeks to decide though - I need to upgrade the electric service to the room, which I am not comfortable doing myself, so have to wait on the electrician.

Maybe try the water resistant laminate flooring. Might be better suited for a fish room.

Nick, really appreciate the feedback! I totally agree that the durability of laminate or LVP would be superior in functionality for a fish room. However, this is a room I spend a lot of leisure time in, so I prefer a natural stone floor as it is more pleasant to walk on.

Looks like you’re the person to ask, hopefully this is an appropriate place: are any of hygger’s lights appropriate for use as reef lights on a 20G AIO, with good color balance and sufficient PAR for corals and fish? Thanks.

it depends on the dimensions of the tank, as well as what corals you are planning to grow. The answer generally is yes, but answers to the above will help in choosing what fixture is appropriate. It is worth noting that I have more experience with hygger pumps, not so much the lights, but all of their products are high quality for the price point in my experience.

Assuming your AIO is cube-like dimensions, this is probably the Hygger light I'd recommend, and feel free to use code TX_REEF for 10% off if you like... https://www.hygger-online.com/product/aquarium-marine-clip-on-light/

Electric upgrades going in today! We are installing 2 new circuits which together should handle up to 7000 watts max draw, far in excess of the 3000-4000 max I expect to need. Next up will be painting, should have that done by the end of August (vacation will delay me a bit)

I have decided to go with granite tile in the Reef Room. I've ordered "flamed" (matte finish) tiles which give a very natural look and a pleasant, non-slip surface for walking upon. I may need to re-think the wall color, it now seems quite dark when combined with the dark floor.

Big delivery today!

My flamed granite floor tile arrived. 6 pounds per tile, 10 tiles per box, 16 boxes… a forklift would have been nice! The photos don’t do the tile justice, the feel and appearance of the granite is incredible.

I also ordered two new 50 gallon Zoo Med lowboy frag tanks that I have to go pick up from the LFS this week.

Looking good. I just hope that electrician is not going to run that nm-b cable through conduit on the outside of the house.
We did run the cable outside on the exterior wall with metal conduit and then through the attic. May I ask why that might be a problem?
