I’m a software engineer with spare time. I considered just writing a quick script to watch this page and wait for the image then do an instant check and circle the changes. But that felt unsporting to folks without this kind of background.

honestly I'm pretty flexible with stuff like this. Looking back. I did one of these years ago with a silly pic of me back in the basement days. And I think to keep the winner secure I had everyone send there results to me personally. Did anyone dig that thread up last Arbor Day? it was fun. lol.

anyway, I may have botched this in that regard but I think as long as the top 5 or 6 are all content, i'm very cool with it. You known I will hook you all up anyway! :)

I write python code for a living. Would have taken maybe 20 minutes and I’d have had all the differences posted within 5 seconds of the second image popping up. But that wouldn’t be right, right? Or am i just an idiot that passed up $2k worth of corals for some kind of false morality?

Maybe I should have embraced the evil or the season. Perhaps I am not worthy of Buddy Gutz.

It’s the same reason I don’t cheat at TSA’s live sales. They post random colonies and stuff throughout the sale for like $5 or some expensive frag for $10. I could write a script just to buy them all, but that just feels like it kills the joy in the community. I want more people to experience happiness in this hobby to bring more people in. Or maybe I’m just an idiot.

Nah, web scraper would pull all the fun out of it, speaking for myself and my perspective. It would be a pretty easy thing to write up but in the end what is more fun, the anticipation and rush of the hunt or just pulling down the W?

I can respect your decision to not use your knowledge to gain an unfair advantage. There was a other vendor whose threads I used to frequent but he followed the traditional live sale method where he would periodically release some corals for incredibly cheap and it was one person who was able to get all of them. I knew he was using technology somehow and it was incredibly frustrating for an idiot like me. It got to where I no longer join his sales because of it.

I’m certain there are lots of folks out there using scraper scripts and stuff to gain an advantage. It’s just not for me in this community. If I’m trying to buy some other item that is in short supply or something I will absolutely do what I can to win. But I love this community. Doing stuff like what you describe is just a “screw everyone else, I got mine” mentality that doesn’t belong in what should be a tight knit community of enthusiasts that love this hobby.
